The network of baths and steam rooms that grew up around
the mineral springs is demonstrated by amazing video
re-creations.
In Roman times pilgrims tossed tiny prayer-inscribed
plaques into the waters, invoking Minerva's favor. Modern
visitors have filled several of the pools with coins
and paper bills - invoking the powers of the gods of
prosperity perhaps.
Next to these Roman ruins 18th century builders created
the Pump Room. This was where fashionable society came
to 'take the waters'.
