Canterbury is the origins of The English Christianity. It
is the site where St. Augustine, the monk sent by Gregory
the Great to Christianize the English, baptized King Etherbert
of Kent on Whit Sunday in 597. Augustine became the first
Archbishop of Canterbury, and his church, dedicated to Christ
Jesus, was later burned by the Danes during the reign of Archbishop
Alphege. The Tomb of Archbishop of Canterbury Henry Chichele
was erected for him in 1427 and he did not die until 1443.
He was educated at Winchester College and New College Oxford.
The Arch Bishop of Canterbury is the person who performs all
and any coronations in the United Kingdom. |
