Geographically too, England lies at the centre of the world
with the Prime Meridian passing through London. Here's where
the time is +0 GMT and is considered as a reference to calculate
the time all over the world.
England comprises the central and southern two-thirds of
the island of Great Britain, plus offshore islands of which
the largest is the Isle of Wight. It is bordered to the north
by Scotland and to the west by Wales. It is closer to continental
Europe than any other part of Britain, divided from France
only by a 21 mile (34 km) sea gap.
England is both the most populous and the most ethnically
diverse nation in the United
Kingdom with around 49 million inhabitants, of which roughly
a tenth are from non-White ethnic groups. It is one of the
most densely populated countries in Europe, second only to
the Netherlands in terms of population density.
Due to its long and rich history, England has been stuffed
with many historical landmarks which tell their interesting
stories. Places like the City
of London, big castles like the Windsor
Castle & the Dover
Castle, rivers like the Thames, Severn, Trent, Tyne are
all well know to share their part in Britain's history. England
is mostly flat with most of its mountain regions in the northwest
part. The English people have taken good care of their environment
by setting up many conservation areas like the Lake
District (Cumbria). Such areas are designated as area
of outstanding natural beauty (AONB).
The most major towns in England are London,
Birmingham,
Manchester, Leeds,
Liverpool,
Bradford,
Bristol, Coventry, Leicester, Notthingham, Sheffield amongst others. Being so small in size, you are never far away from
the long sandy beaches of England. You can stay anywhere in
England can reach the sea virtually within an hour's time.
With over 3300 miles of motorway and 470 airports around the
British Isles, travelling has neverbeen so easy and stress
free.
The weather is mostly cloudy with an overcast for more than
over 300 days every year. So if you do not like the sun, England
is your place. In summer, days may last as long as 18 hours
while in winter, a typical day maybe just about 7-8 hours
long. Winter's are very chilly with snow fall in the central
and northern parts of England. You may occasionally see snow
fall in the southern parts of England.
Although England is one of the wealthiest countries in the
world, the English people have kept their city skylines clear
of sky scrappers. The tallest building in London is One Canada
Square at the Canary Wharf, which accomodates just 50 floors
and is only 771 feet tall. But, England has shown its share
of modern technology by setting up the best exhibits ever.
One of such tourist attraction is the British
Airways London Eye, a giant wheel 135 feet tall which
will enchant you with views upto 25 miles around London.
England is the home country of cricket and you can see cricket
every where. In London
itself are based worlds two famous cricket grouds, The
Lords and The
Oval. Many a stars of cricket have played for England.
Although England has never had a chance of winning the world
cup despite reaching it 3 times, the English cricket team
is considered to be a top challenge in today's cricket world.
As for entertainment, England is second to none. The Blackpool
Pleasure Beach is the home to one of the fastest, longest
and tallest roller coasters in Europe. There are many other
theme parks like the Drayton
Manor Park, Thorpe Park, Alton
Towers and American Adventure Theme Park. Children can
have fun at Legoland
which is located just outside West London in Windsor.
All in all, this is just a brief summary of what England was
and how it is now. But, to explore England, you will have
to come and visit us. See our historical places and enjoy
