Dover Castle stands on top of the White Cliffs of Dover.
The castle boasts 2000 years of history. The castle has a
maze of tunnels dug into the cliff and has seen almost continuous
action from the iron age to the second world war. The castle
is administered by English Heritage. Look out for renactment
days in the castle which are great fun but can be noisy for
young children.
The main reason a castle was built in Dover is because its
the nearest landing place in England to mainland Europe and
also because of the position of Dover castle, high above the
white cliffs of Dover, this made the castle defencebly perfect.
Dover Castle, visible from nearly everywhere in Dover (except
the railway station), looks out across the English Channel
with a superb view on a clear day.
The keep is medieval and gives an impression of the times
of King Henry VIII, it is very interesting to look round.
There are secret war tunnels (there are lots of signposts
showing where they are) which you can visit and get a taste
of second world war life.
