British Museum

The British Museum is the largest museum in the UK and one of the oldest museums in the world. The museum was established in 1753, so is well over 250 years old.

The Museum exists to illuminate the histories of cultures, for the benefit of present and future generations. Here you will find amazing collections from Africa, America, Asia, Britain, Egypt, Europe, Greece, Japan, Near East, Pacific, Rome, etc.

The British Museum

Ancient civilizations, the History of Art, religion and ritual, languages and translation, are just a few of the things you can learn about in the VERY LARGE museum.

A mix of archeology, history and art will give you an incredible insight of our past. The Museum has 3 floors, and please remember you cannot see everything in one visit (or in half a dozen). Here you can see the famous Rosetta Stone, an incredible collection of Egyptian artifacts and mummies, as well as dazzling parts of Assyrian gates and walls.

It has two and one half miles of galleries displaying artifacts from almost every aspect of international cultural history. Some of the highlights of the British Museum are the Rosetta Stone, the Celts and the Lindow Man, the Elgin Marbles in the Parthenon Galleries, the Sutton Hoo and Mildenhall treasures, the Portland Vase, the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Arts of Korea. The Roxie Walker Galleries of Egyptian Funerary Archaeology presents the British Museum's unparalleled collection of Egyptian mummies.

If you're a museum geek easily plan for this stop to last a day. If you're just looking to check it of the "must see" list, the highlights can probably be done in an hour.

You can also marvel at the museum's Great Court with a magnificent glass and steel roof by Sir Norman Foster. Don't leave without a peek into the Reading Room in the center...a jaw dropping library.

In addition to all this, there are special exhibitions and daily gallery tours and talks.
