Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace promises a magical journey back through 500 years of royal history. Discover the magnificent State Apartments of Henry VIII and William III, explore 60 acres of immaculate riverside gardens and lose yourself in the world-famous maze.

Hampton Court Palace is one of the Royal Historic Palaces - the greatest palace in Britain. For almost 200 years, Hampton Court Palace was at the centre of court life, politics and national history. Although often identified with Henry VIII, its history was influenced just as much by William III and Queen Mary II in the late 17th century. The Palace is surrounded with beautiful Gardens and The Maze, is the only remaining part of William III's Wilderness.

Hampton Court Palace contains an important part of the largest private collection of art in the world, the Royal Collection, the property of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This collection, which covers 500 years, is complete and Hampton Court contains much of the most important material from the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries.

The Maze at Hampton Court, the royal palace on the Thames to the west of London, is probably the most famous hedge maze in the world. It was planted as part of the gardens laid out for William of Orange between 1689 and 1695 by George London and Henry Wise. It was described with great wit in Jerome K. Jerome's novel 'Three Men in a Boat.' Hampton Court Maze continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The best way to reach Hampton Court is by cruise from Westminster. The sights on the way are really interesting and the 'cockney' commentary is fantastic. Just one way will do, returning by train is quicker and if you have a london pass you get discount on the cruise. Cruises depart from Westminster, duration of cruise: is 3-4 hours. Refreshments available on vessel at reasonable prices, depart about 10 am.

Hampton court is a great way to spend a day out of London. You can get there by train using a 6 zone pass ticket, or by river boat which will take a couple of hours one way from Westminster. You can get guided tours there, or have a tape or cd to go around yourself. There are lots of things to see, from the old kitchens to the old Tudor rooms to the newer rooms built by Christopher Wren. There are several cafes, one in an old kitchen area, and gift shops strewn about the grounds. There is a maze outside, the old tennis courts, the Great Vine and lots of formal gardens.

Costumed guides and audio tours bring the palace to life and provide an insight into how life in the palace would have been in the time of Henry VIII and William III. The Palace also has a programme of special events throughout the year.

Approaching Hampton Court from the river is a sight, a palace rising from the river. It used to have golden rooftops and chimneys painted and must have looked very impressive back in the days of the kings and queens. It has a few grace and favour apartments but mostly it's there to be explored. There are staff members wandering the grounds in period costumes, willing to tell you about what their character's way of life would have been in that period.

Its just so magnificent, and so well restored to the 15-16th century. Definitely make it one of the top 10 places to see when in the London area.
