London Bridge

Most people misunderstand the Tower Bridge to be the London Bridge where as it is not. The London Bridge is just like any other Bridge over the river Thames. You are most likely looking for the retractable bridge which is opened and closed to let ships go through it for more than 500,000 times for almost a century now. If that is so, then please visit the Tower Bridge Exhibition page. If not carry on reading.

The London Bridge was one of the first bridges to be built across the Thames. It is said that when the Romans first came to London in 43 A.D., they needed a bridge to move their army across this great river. The place where a bridge could be built could only be where the water is the most shallow. This gave birth to the London Bridge.

However, with time the bridge collapsed and a new bridge had to be built on the river in the year 1960 to accomodate the ever increasing vehicles on the British Soil.

People are interested by the sale of the London Bridge when it was no more sufficient to handle the increasing number of cars. So the British Government decided to put up the bridge for sale and invited offers from all over the world. Robert McCulloh of McCulloh Oils US put the highest bid of $ 2.45 Million. The bridge is then said to be disassembled, transported to Arizona and then reconstructed over there. Apparently, McCulloh thought he was being sold the famous Tower Bridge which led into a controversy. Eventually, the London Bridge was setup in Arizona and lives as the costliest sold Antique in the World. So, if you ever happen to visit Arizona, do have a look at the historic bridge which existed in London, came through two world wars and now stands on US soil as a piece of history.
