Wimbledon's association with lawn tennis began in 1869. The
world famous lawn tennis club was originally founded for the
enjoyment of croquet, but as tennis gained in popularity, became
the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (still its official
title) in 1882. The Wimbledon Championships have always been
played in the club grounds; these were originally sited at premises
in Worple Road, but since 1922 have been located at the famous
venue in Church Road.
There are currently 4 grand slams in the world of lawn tennis.
Namely The French Open, The US Open, The Australian Open and
The Wimbledon. The Wimbledon tournament is considered the queen
of all the 4 grand slams and is holds much more prestige in
lawn tennis competition.
