The town has a fine Norman Castle boasting a medieval banqueting
hall, furnished Jacobean apartments, ghostly apparitions and
a fine herringbone curtain wall. New for 2003 is an interactive
‘The Normans are Coming’ exhibition and a full
programme of living history events, culminating in the popular
Castle By Candlelight event in October. The Castle stands
above beautiful floral terraces overlooking the rivers Anker
and Tame and the open space of the Castle Pleasure Grounds.
The Parish and Collegiate Church of St Editha, the largest
parish church in Staffordshire, dominates the town centre.
This superb church, founded in 963, but rebuilt after a fire
in 1345, has a unique double spiral staircase in the 15th
tower and magnificent stained glass William Morris windows.
Market Street, in the shadow of the castle, is also home
to the old Town Hall with its Tuscan columns. This was built
in 1701 by Thomas Guy - then MP for the town. The building
has had a long association with another famous MP –
Sir Robert Peel – founder of the modern police force
and Prime Minister. His statue stands in front of the building
from where the repeal of the infamous Corn Laws was announced
as the Tamworth Manifesto.
