York Minster, largest Gothic church in England, is the gem
of York. York Minster is the largest medieval structure in
the UK, and the largest Gothic cathedral in all of Northern
Europe. The building began in about 1220 and was finally completed
in 1472. You will see fine 100 stained glass windows, and
countless other highlights.
It is 524 feet (160m) long and 249 feet (76m) wide. The height
from floor to vault is over 90 feet (27m).The twin west towers
are about 184 feet (56m) high, and the lantern tower 234 feet
(71m).
It's the most beautiful structure in York and the views from
the top of the Central Tower are breathtaking. Climb up the
275 steps to the top and you will not regret the sights you
get to see. Two million people visit York Minster every year,
whether as tourists or pilgrims.
The Foundations Museum under the Minster shows how the present
building was constructed on the site of a Norman Cathedral,
which was itself built on a Roman Fort.
York Minster is an amazing construction , where you'll find
the Choir Screen with 15 statues of kings of England (from
William I to Henry VI). Also the central nave is a masterpiece.
The city walls of York are a marvelous structure still standing
in all it's glory. |
