Glasgow University

The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 and is the second oldest in Scotland (after St. Andrews) and fourth oldest in the UK. The University has been on this site since 1870 when it moved from the city centre. Originally the University was only for boys. The girls college was on Queen Margaret Drive.

It houses the Hunterian Museum which is the oldest public museum in Scotland. The Hunterian Art Gallery, opened in 1980, holds collections of the old masters bequeathed by William Hunter, Scottish and contemporary art, and extensive displays of the work of Whistler. The Mackintosh House is a reconstruction of the Glasgow home of the architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The tall spire of Glasgow University dominates the western skyline of the city. The university, unlike all those upstart polytechnics that have usurped the title of university in recent years, has a long and venerable history of excellence. It was founded more than 550 years ago and its famous alumni include Adam Smith (economist), a trio of famous inventors - John Baird (television), Joseph Lister (antiseptics) and James Watt (steam engines) - and of course old Cliffie.

Its main building, which was designed in Gothic style by Sir George Gilbert Scott, and sits on the crest of a hill, is one of the city's best known landmarks.

Glasgow University is very beautiful and it is very nice to take a walk in Kelvingrove park which is the garden that is surrounding the university.
