Glasgow is Scotland's 2nd largest city, situated on the banks
of the River Clyde; it is the gateway to the Trossachs, the
beautiful West Coast and the Highlands of Scotland. Glasgow
is a busy, friendly, vibrant city with fine architecture,
superb shopping facilities and a wide cultural interest.
A visit to Glasgow would be incomplete without seeing the
award winning Burrell
Collection, housed in Pollock Country Park. Sir William
and Lady Burrell bequeathed their fabulous collection of antiques,
artefacts and paintings, to Glasgow City in 1944.
George
Square is the hub of the city and is the place from which
travellers can visit many locations throughout the city. The
City
Chambers, opened by Queen Victoria in 1888, are a materpiece
of Victorian Architecture, well worth visiting to see the
magnificent staircase and banqueting hall.
Central Glasgow has many other fine buildings with a diversity
of architectural styles, Glasgow
Cathedral is one of Scotland's finest Gothic buildings,
dating from the 12th and 13th centuries.
The Glasgow
University was founded in 1451 and is the second oldest
in Scotland (after St. Andrews) and fourth oldest in the UK.
Mackintosh House at the Hunterian Art Gallery is worth a visit.
Glasgow has a tradition of being an Engineering city. The
Museum
of Transport is a snapshot of what that means.
Glasgow is a great place to go shopping. Modern shopping
complexes compliment the traditional well known Glasgow City
centre streets, with their fabulous choice of shops. Its second
only to London in the UK for shopping.
