Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves
National Showcaves Centre for Wales

Dan-yr-Ogof is the largest showcave complex in western Europe with award winning lighting and sound system. Located in the Upper Swansea Valley, just ten miles north of the city hub, this award-winning tourist attraction is a great day out for everyone, be it an educational visit or a fun-packed day out for the whole family. Experience stunning natural phenomena in three enormous caves, marvel at the Dinosaurs, rub shoulders with our Shire Horses down on the farm, imagine life in an Iron Age Village and browse in the Craft Shop.

In 1912 the two brothers, Tommy and Jeff Morgan had the courage to explore the cave. They used only candles to light their way and arrows

in the sand to find their way back. They discovered a wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites, but they were prevented from penetrating far into the mountain by a lake. Undeterred they returned, this time with coracles. A coracle is a traditional one man fishing boat found on the rivers of West Wales. They crossed not one lake but four. They discovered more magnificent passages and chambers, but again the way on was denied them. This time it was a tight crawl. This crawl was not passed until 1963 when Eileen Davies, a local girl and member of the South Wales Caving Club struggled through it. She and others have now found over 10 miles of unique cave. Cavers believe that this is the tip of the iceberg and that there is still much to discover.

These Showcaves are owned and run by the descendants of the Morgan family who originally discovered Dan-yr-Ogof. They are all natural. Only the footpaths, electrical lighting, and the entrances you walk through today are man-made - all the rest is nature’s work.

There is a themed play area for children. The play area is designed for 6-10 year olds.

Although, there are good pathways throughout the Showcaves, sensible sturdy shoes are advisable. High heels are NOT a good idea! We suggest you allow a minimum of 2.5 - 3 hours to see all 10 attractions.

• Gift shop
